Water on the floor

Washer leaking: trace the water

Water that shows up behind the washer about three-quarters of the way through the spin usually comes from the standpipe, not the machine. GE calls that overflow a house plumbing problem. Watch one load closely before booking a Honolulu repair.

Short answer

Why is my washing machine leaking?

Where a washing machine is leaking from tells you most. If water is pooling, turn the washer off at its control or breaker instead of pulling the plug while you stand in water, and close both valves. On a front-loader, drips usually come from soil or soap on the door seal, clothes hanging over the drum edge, or a detergent drawer left ajar. A steadier front-load leak often means blocked dispenser ports, sometimes from pods in the drawer. A top-loader wet at the front left is usually its overflow tube catching too many suds. Behind either type, check the hose washers and the standpipe. A leak with no detergent, or water entering while the washer is off, needs a technician.

Stacked homes

Why a leak spreads further in Honolulu condos

In a stacked building, a burst fill hose does not stop at your floor; it reaches the unit below. GE and Whirlpool both put washer fill hoses on a five-year cycle, and GE adds the screens and rubber seals in the hose ends. EPA says wet materials should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to keep mold from starting, a short window in damp Honolulu air. Who may shut off a riser is set by each building's declaration and house rules, so learn yours before you need it.

How is a washer leak pinned down?

1

Make safe

Power is cut at the breaker, the valves are closed and the floor is dried, so the next drop shows exactly where it starts.

2

Spot check

Front, rear or underneath narrows it fast. On a Honolulu top-loader, a cycle with no detergent separates a suds overflow from a real internal leak.

3

Hoses and drain

Both fill hoses, their rubber washers and the drain hose are inspected, along with how deep the drain hose sits in the standpipe.

4

Inside

If the leak is internal, the failed part is found and replaced. An inlet valve that lets water in with the power off is one common example.

01

Finding the leak

Usually it is the overflow tube doing its job, catching suds from too much detergent and spilling them out.
Yes. GE's test: take a washcloth from a washed load and swish it in hot water. A white film on the water means too much detergent, and soft water makes the suds worse. Cut the dose, run a rinse, and see if the puddle stops.
GE points to soil or soap on the door seal and items hanging over the drum edge. Wipe the seal and keep the load inside the drum.
If they go in the dispenser, yes. GE says pods placed there do not dissolve, block the ports, and back fill water up until it spills. Pods belong in the drum. Clean the trays at least monthly so the ports stay open.
Look at the standpipe, not the washer. GE says a drain that overflows about three-quarters of the way through spin is a house plumbing problem, and a hose jammed too far down the pipe can cause back-pressure flooding too.
02

Safety and parts

That is usually a failed water inlet valve, and GE says it has to be replaced.
No. GE says to cut power at the control or the breaker instead of unplugging while standing in water. Then close both valves and look over the two fill hoses and the drain hose.
They seal each hose end at the valve and at the machine. Missing or damaged ones are a classic rear leak. GE puts them, and the small screens beside them, on a five-year replacement cycle along with the hoses.
It can. GE says soft water makes oversudsing worse, and a USGS summary of Hawaii public supplies found hardness generally below 120 mg/L, soft to moderately hard. That was data from 1969 to 1985, so treat it as history, not a current reading. If a Honolulu top-loader keeps puddling at the front, measure the detergent before anything else.
It can. EPA says to dry leaks within 24 to 48 hours to keep mold from starting, and in humid Honolulu homes the floor under a washer stays damp longer.
