About this site

One island, 33 neighborhood boards, one way to book

The City and County of Honolulu covers all of Oahu, split into 33 Neighborhood Board areas. This page explains how a repair visit is booked and run in any of them, what the site covers, and where an appliance visit stops and another trade takes over.

What does an appliance visit cover here?

This site covers in-home repair of six appliance types: refrigerators and freezers, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens with their ranges and cooktops, and ice makers. Separate brand pages go deeper on thirty brands, from Sub-Zero and Wolf to Samsung and Whirlpool. Some work sits outside an appliance visit, and we say so up front. Air conditioners and mini-splits belong to a different trade. So does gas line work behind a range or dryer. And when the trouble is the house plumbing, such as a standpipe that backs up as soon as the washer drains, that is a job for a plumber. In a Honolulu condo, a shared dryer riser is usually the association's to deal with.

What happens when you book a visit?

Give the model and serial number on the first call, since those two lines decide which parts fit; on a Whirlpool dishwasher the tag sits on the tub or the door frame. Say what you already tried: power, breaker, water valve, filter. Leave a failing fridge plugged in, as GE asks, so the fault is still there to see. At a Honolulu visit the cause is confirmed and the failed part shown. Hawaii has no sales tax, but its general excise tax, 4.5 percent on Oahu, applies to repair work, so ask whether a quote includes it.

The homes these visits reach

Honolulu County had 337,061 occupied homes in the 2019-2023 Census survey. Owners lived in 200,686 of them and renters in 136,375, so about 40.5 percent of households rent. That shapes a repair call. A tenant in a Honolulu walk-up often needs the landlord's go-ahead before a part is ordered, and the landlord may want the estimate in writing. An owner can usually approve on the spot. Either way, the person who can say yes should know the model number, the symptom and roughly when the machine was bought before the visit.

The stock is old. Of all structures on the island, 67.8 percent were built between 1940 and 1989, and only 8.3 percent in 2010 or later. Older kitchens and laundry corners were laid out for older machines. A new appliance dropped into that space can meet tight clearances, an aging outlet or a supply valve nobody has turned in years. GE, for one, says fridge sweat can come from too little air space around the cabinet. Those details get checked along with the appliance, because a repair that ignores the space it sits in tends to come back.

Our approach

If the fix is a setting, a filter or a door that was not fully shut, you should hear that on the phone, not pay for a trip. When the fault is a part, you see the reason, the estimate and the likely wait before anything is ordered, since most parts cross the ocean by ship. If the machine is near the end of its life, you hear that too, along with the City's bulky pickup and drop-off routes and the federal rule that an old fridge's refrigerant is recovered before scrapping.
