Whirlpool dishwasher repair, from the cup out

Tablet still sitting in the cup? Whirlpool says a dispenser that was damp when you loaded it can hold detergent back, and an upper rack in its lowest slot can stop the lid opening. Check both before booking us on Oahu.

The detergent cup

Why does the tablet stay in a Whirlpool cup?

Most often the lid never opened or the water never got hot. Whirlpool's list is short: detergent that clumped after sitting open to the air, a cycle that was cut off early, a pan handle or wooden spoon in front of the lid, and a cup that was damp when filled. Run the kitchen tap hot before starting. Keep detergent sealed in a cool, dry spot, which takes some doing in a humid Oahu kitchen. If the lid still sticks with all that right, the latch or wash system needs a look.

Whirlpool dishwasher codes that point past the reset

Whirlpool's first step for nearly all of these is the same: power off for 30 seconds at the plug or breaker. These are the ones that keep coming back.

Has Whirlpool ever recalled its dishwashers?

Yes, twice in notices worth checking on an older unit. In May 1996 about 500,000 Whirlpool and Kenmore machines were recalled because door latch wiring could overheat and catch fire; the Whirlpool models start DU8, DP8, DU9 or GDP and were sold from June 1991 to October 1992. In February 2005 it was under-counter plastic tall tub models starting DU1, DUL, GU1, GU2 or GU6, with serials FR2200000 to FR2499999, over wash motor wiring. Read the tag on the tub edge with the door open.

Detergent and water

It is for powder or gel users who want some detergent at the very start. Filled level, it holds about eight cubic centimeters, and that dose goes in as soon as the cycle begins. Whirlpool's own advice is pre-measured tablets or packs in the main cup with the lid shut, which makes the Pre-Wash spot optional.
Usually too much powder sits in the cup; level it off and the lid should latch.
A little is. Whirlpool keeps water about halfway up the filter area so the seals there do not dry out, and the next cycle swaps it for fresh water. A tub floor covered in water after a finished cycle is a different story and belongs on the drain checklist.
At least monthly, upper and lower, under running water; Whirlpool calls the setup triple filtration.
Not necessarily. Whirlpool says an upper assembly that turns freely is simply not locked in. Seat the lower filter first, then twist the upper one until it locks, because running without the filters in place can damage the machine.

Codes and service

Some Whirlpool models have a Leak Detection System. When it senses a leak it flashes a light on the front and pumps the water out, so look under the door and at the hose connections.
Count the Clean light: first burst is the F number, then a short gap, then the E number.
No. Dish soap makes suds and dishwasher detergent does not; the foam can push water out of the door and leave dishes dirty. If it already happened, turn the machine off, let the suds settle, then drain.
Whirlpool advises one at 15 grains per gallon or more. USGS data from decades ago put Oahu's public water in the soft to moderately hard range, so most homes here fall below that line, though cloudy glasses still call for a closer look.
Open the door and look along the edge of the tub; a phone photo of it speeds up the parts order.
