Will not run

Washer won't start: read the panel first

On some Whirlpool washers, dr on the display only means three cycles have run without anyone opening the door. Open it, shut it, and press Start again before you book a Honolulu repair.

Short answer

Why won't my washer start?

A washer that won't start is usually waiting on its lock, its Start button or its panel. Some top-loaders fill before the lid locks and others will not begin until it does, while a front-load door can look shut without engaging. Hold Start for up to about three seconds; some panels count down 3, 2, 1. Then read the display. LoC or LC is Control Lock, released by holding that key three seconds, and -:-- means the knob sits on an unassigned position. Still nothing? Unplug it, five minutes for Whirlpool or one for GE, open both water valves, and give it an outlet of its own. A lid that stays locked after a reset needs a technician.

What the display is trying to tell you

Before you assume the control has failed, read what it shows. These Whirlpool readouts look like faults but mostly ask you to do one small thing.

On the visit

How does a technician find a no-start fault?

1

What showed

Lights or no lights, any code, a click from the lock: those details, plus the model number, set the order of checks for the Honolulu visit.

2

Lock

The lid or door lock is tested to see whether it engages and reports back. A lid that stays locked after a reset points at the lock itself.

3

Supply

Outlet, breaker, both water valves and both hoses are confirmed, since some front-loaders refuse to run unless hot and cold are connected and open.

4

Control

Only then are the control and its wiring tested. The faulty part is replaced and a short cycle runs so you see it fill, wash and drain.

Cause by cause

Panel and lock

A lit panel with no action usually means the lid or door has not locked, or Start was only tapped. A front-load door can look closed without engaging its lock, so open it and shut it firmly. Then hold Start for about three seconds rather than pressing it once.
Some Whirlpool panels show that countdown to tell you to keep holding Start until it finishes.
It means Control Lock is on, the same as LC on some models. Hold the lock key for three seconds to release it.
Three cycles have run without the door being opened, so open and close it before starting the next load.
Whirlpool says that readout means the cycle knob is resting on an unassigned position. Turn it onto a named cycle and press Start again.

Power and water

Whirlpool says to leave it unplugged for five minutes; GE says one minute for its models.
Some do. Whirlpool says certain front-loaders will not run unless both the hot and cold hoses are connected and their valves open, even on a cold wash. If a valve was shut for plumbing work in your Honolulu building, open it again before you call. A shut valve can look exactly like a dead washer.
No, GE says a washer belongs on its own outlet, so unplug anything else sharing it and test again.
Not in Honolulu. GE lists frozen water in the pump as a no-start cause only in unheated spaces below 32 degrees F, and only about 6 F separates Honolulu's warmest and coolest months. Look at the lock, the panel and the power instead.
Stop there and do not force it. GE treats a lid that stays locked after a reset as a service call. A Honolulu technician tests the lock and its wiring before anything else.
