Sub-Zero service

Sub-Zero repair for built-in cold storage

Sub-Zero started in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1945, when Westye Bakke needed a steady cold spot for his son's insulin. We repair the brand's refrigerators, freezers and ice makers in houses and condos across Oahu.

Product families

Sub-Zero lines and the prefixes that name them

The letters at the start of the model number tell you the family, and the family decides which manual, parts and reset steps apply.

Rating plate

What does the plate tell a technician?

It gives the model and serial numbers, the build date, the total amp draw, and, on Sub-Zero units, the refrigerant type and charge. The plate moves from family to family. On over/under models look inside the refrigerator door near the top hinge; on side-by-sides it sits inside the freezer door. A clear phone photo of it does two jobs. It shows which warranty term the unit is still in, and it lets the right parts be checked before anyone opens a panel.

Can salt air mark Sub-Zero stainless?

Yes, and the maker says so itself. Sub-Zero's support pages say stainless resists rust without being immune, name high salinity as one condition that beats it, and admit that in coastal or tropical places some rust over time may not be preventable. Its outdoor undercounter model, the UC-24RO, goes through salt spray booth testing. Indoor kitchen units are not built or tested that way. A fridge or wine unit on an open lanai near the shore lives in a hard spot.

The company

Sub-Zero Group, Inc., a privately held company in Madison that is in its third generation of Bakke family ownership.
The company says its freezers were the first to meet strict quality rules for freezing food safely below zero, and the name points to that.
Wolf and Cove. The group gives each brand one kitchen job: Sub-Zero handles refrigeration, Wolf handles cooking and Cove makes dishwashers. Its factories are listed in Wisconsin, Iowa and Arizona.
Yes. On September 19, 1994, the company offered no-charge inspections of about 61,000 model 550 and 501 built-in refrigerator/freezers installed from June 1989 through December 1992. There had been 30 reports of units tipping forward and nine injuries. CPSC said every tipover involved a unit that was not properly secured when it was installed, so an older built-in should still be fixed to studs or solid cabinets.
Every 20 minutes, according to the maker. The system arrived in 2008, and Sub-Zero says it draws on NASA-developed technology to strip ethylene and odor from the air inside.

Warranty and visits

Yes, because the written terms cover units installed in the fifty states, D.C. or Canada for normal residential use. The build date on the rating plate shows which term is still running.
Parts only. Between years six and twelve the compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and connecting tubing are repaired or replaced as parts, while labor and other costs fall to the owner. Inside the first five years, sealed system parts and labor are both covered. Our page on repairs during a warranty explains how to check which side of that line your unit sits on.
No, spare water filters and air purification cartridges sit outside the product warranty.
A photo of the rating plate, the family name if you know it, and a note of which side is failing, fresh food or freezer. Write down any word flashing on the display. If the unit is a tall built-in, mention whether it is fixed to the wall or cabinets, since that matters before it is pulled out.
Often, yes. Parts not on hand on Oahu usually travel from the mainland by ship or air, which is why the model and serial numbers matter at the first call.
