Oven temperature not accurate? Bake a test batch first
Whirlpool tells owners not to judge an oven by a thermometer at all, and GE calls one the wrong first tool. Both want a bake test instead. GE's is simple: canned biscuits, baked exactly as the package says.

Why is my oven temperature not accurate?
Usually it is the setup, not the oven. Some swing is built in, because elements and burners cycle on and off, and GE treats plus or minus 30 degrees as normal. If a test batch comes out wrong, check what is in the oven. Dark pans need about 25 degrees less. Pans want 1 to 2 inches of space around them, and foil spread over a whole rack blocks the air. Racks slid in backward can hold the door off its seal. With the setup right, an offset of up to 30 degrees can be set from the control. Results that stay off after that, or a bake element that never glows red, need a technician.
Three makers, three ways to check an oven
The makers agree that a thermometer misleads, then part ways on the details. Read your own manual before changing anything in a Honolulu kitchen.
| Maker | Thermometer | Check they prefer | What the owner may change | Also noted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GE | Not the first tool | Canned biscuits baked to the package directions | Fix the setup: pan color, spacing, foil | A torn gasket goes to a technician |
| Whirlpool | Do not use one | A bake test | Offset up to 30 F either way, no more than 10 degrees per change | A 208-volt supply, a hidden element, spare racks and a cold room all slow preheat |
| Frigidaire | Not stated there | Not stated there | Not stated there | Do not rub or pull on the woven door gasket |
What is throwing the temperature off?
| Cause | How you can tell | Owner check or technician job |
|---|---|---|
| Normal cycling | Food turns out fine; only a thermometer says the oven is off | Nothing to fix: the heat swings around the set point by design |
| Dark or crowded pans | Bottoms brown early; pans sit close to the walls or each other | Owner check: about 25 degrees lower for dark pans, 1 to 2 inches around each pan, about 2 inches from the back wall |
| Foil over a rack | Uneven baking, pale tops over a dark underside | Owner check: take the foil off so air can move |
| Racks in backward | The door will not sit flat against the frame | Owner check: refit the racks the right way round |
| Torn door gasket | A visible tear or gap; heat felt at the door edge | Technician job: GE sends gasket replacement to service |
| Element or control fault | Bake element never glows red, or results stay off after an offset | Technician job |
How is a wrong oven temperature pinned down?
The story
A Honolulu technician starts with what you baked, how far off it came out, and whether the trouble began after a move, a cleaning or a new install.
The setup
Rack direction, pan spacing, foil and the door gasket are looked at first. Nothing gets replaced while a setup fault is still in play.
Heat source
With the power off, the bake element is checked for breaks, then watched for its red glow once power is back. Gas ovens get the burner checked.
Calibrate
Once the parts test good, the offset is set within the control's range and a bake run confirms it before anyone leaves your Honolulu home.
