No oven flame

Gas oven won't light? Empty the drawer first

Pans crammed into the storage drawer under a gas oven can press against the igniter, and Whirlpool lists that as a reason the oven never lights. Clear the drawer, then work through the checks below. If you smell gas, stop, leave the house and call the gas supplier from outside.

Short answer

Why won't my gas oven light?

A gas oven that will not light most often has a weak or failed igniter, or no gas reaching the oven while the cooktop still works. Test the igniter by eye: set Bake, open the door and look for a red glow near the back of the oven floor. No glow points to the igniter, the controls or other electrical parts. Simple blockers come next: a liner or foil on the oven bottom, a crowded storage drawer, a two-prong adapter, a self-clean latch left locked, knobs swapped after cleaning, or Sabbath mode. A shutoff lever on the pressure regulator, knocked off during delivery, starves the oven alone. Slow lighting or a boom needs a technician, not more tries.

On the visit

How is a gas oven that won't light diagnosed?

1

Safety

The first check in any Honolulu kitchen is for a gas smell. If there is one, work stops and the gas supplier is called from outside.

2

Watch it

Bake is set and the igniter is watched. How long it glows before flame, or whether it glows at all, splits the electrical side from the gas side.

3

Supply side

With power off, the regulator lever, outlet grounding and the oven floor are checked, and the drawer is emptied so the igniter in your Honolulu range can be seen clearly.

4

Repair, relight

The failed part is replaced, then the oven is lit several times. Flame color is checked, and the anti-tip bracket is engaged again before the range goes back.

Gas on Oahu

Gas ovens are the exception in Honolulu kitchens

EIA's 2020 survey found natural gas cooking in about one Hawaii home in ten, against 38 percent nationally, so most island ranges are electric. Where a gas range is in use, it runs on one of two fuels. Homes on Hawaii Gas pipelines get utility gas, a blend that includes synthetic natural gas made from naphtha, while homes off the pipelines burn propane from tanks. On propane, yellow tips on the flame are normal; an all-yellow or orange flame is a job for a gas professional.

Checks you can make

Set Bake, open the door and look near the back of the oven floor for a red glow. GE says no glow points to the igniter, the controls or other electrical parts, all of which are for a technician to test. A glow with no flame is a different fault, and it also needs service rather than repeated tries.
Yes. An overloaded drawer can hit the igniter, and something in it can bump the regulator lever off.
GE lists two cleaning-day traps: a self-clean door latch left locked, and knobs put back on the wrong stems.
It can, so exit the mode as your manual describes and try Bake again before booking a Honolulu visit.
GE says one minute, and to do it even when the clock is working, because the electronic control can be stuck while the display looks normal. Switch the breaker back on, set Bake and watch for the glow again.
02

When it needs service

On the pressure regulator at the back of the range, and GE notes it may not be easy to see. Leave it, and every gas fitting, to a technician in your Honolulu home.
No. GE expects a gas oven to light within 2 to 3 seconds, and anything slower is a service call. Slow lighting lets gas gather before it catches, which is how a boom or a door blowing open happens. Turn the oven off and do not keep testing it while you wait for a Honolulu visit.
Yes. When the oven reaches temperature the igniter is switched off, which closes the safety valve and puts the flame out; it relights when the oven cools.
Yes, but by a technician: GE lists a standing-pilot oven that will not stay lit among its service items. Do not keep relighting it by hand, and if there is any gas odor, leave the house and call the gas supplier from outside before anything else.
DOE puts the average life of gas cooking products at 14.5 years. An igniter or regulator fault on a range well short of that age is a normal repair, and on Oahu a gas range is one of a minority of kitchens, so swapping fuel types is a bigger job than fixing the part. Price the repair in Honolulu before shopping.
