Maytag dryer repair
Maytag tunes its steam cycles for about 5 to 12 dry items. Steam a single shirt and you may find wet spots on it, or condensation on the door and drum. That is load size, not a leak.

Is the Maytag steam actually working?
Usually yes, even when you see nothing. The spray starts about 4 to 5 minutes into a steam cycle and lasts about 5 minutes, often out of sight. A couple of drips from the door afterward is normal condensation. If the clothes truly never get steamed, Maytag's checks are short: water connected and turned on, a washer in both ends of the hose, no kinks, and no tripped Flood Safe hose. The dryer must also sit level, or it cannot sense load moisture properly.
Maytag dryer sounds and their causes
Most Maytag noise calls fall into a few patterns. Some fade on their own, some are an owner fix, and a couple mean worn parts. Match the sound before you decide which.
Thump at startup
After the dryer sits unused, the drum rollers flat-spot. They thump a few minutes until they round out.
Squeal or squeak
Lint inside the cabinet makes the belt and pulleys squeak, and both wear with age.
Metal scraping
Coins, pins or screws wedge along the front or rear drum edge, where the drum meets the cabinet.
Knock or rattle
A missing or unadjusted leg lets the cabinet rock. Leveling it also helps moisture sensing.
Clatter in the blower
A small item slipped down the lint chute and is striking the blower wheel. That one needs the cabinet opened.
Beep mid-cycle
Damp Beep, the default on Bulky/Sheets, says the load is damp, not dry. Reposition it and carry on.
What Maytag owners notice and what it means
| You notice | Maytag's explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Blue or gray marks in the drum | Dye from denim and bright cottons; it does not move to later loads | Paste of powdered detergent and very warm water, then tumble clean towels |
| Darkened rear inlet grille | Heat staining, dye, baked-on lint, mineral residue, or rust where ventilation is poor | Clean off the lint; give a damp laundry room more air |
| Burning or oily smell, new dryer | Normal on a new gas or electric unit | Run it empty for about 15 minutes |
| Clothes smell of paint | The dryer pulls in room air, fumes included | Hold off drying until the room has aired out |
| Time left keeps rising | Automatic cycles recalculate for load size, fabric and added wet clothes | Nothing; it is the sensor at work |
