LG dryer repair

A d90 on an LG dryer is a reading, not a riddle. LG's sensing judges the exhaust duct about 90% blocked. The scale runs d75, d80, d90 and d95, each one the share of the duct it finds restricted.

Six LG codes that are not about the duct

Not every LG dryer code is an airflow warning. Some point at house wiring, some at a sensor, and a couple at a lint filter that was never pushed home. Here is what each one asks you to check.

nP code

No current is reaching the heater because of the house wiring. The drum may run while the air stays cool.

PS code

Wrong voltage in the power cord, which can mean the white and red wires are swapped on the terminal block.

HS code

The humidity sensor is fouled. Wipe the bars below the lint filter with a damp cloth and let them dry.

PF after outages

Cut power, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, restore power. Thermistor codes tE1 and tE3 take the same reset.

dE or F0

dE is a door not fully shut, often the lint filter sitting proud. F0 means the filter is out.

E13 on hybrids

Only hybrid condensing models show it. The drain hose is kinked, clogged or frozen.

Installation check

LG's own exhaust test, step by step

1

Start it

Press Power, then straight away hold your model's button pair, for example Temp plus Signal. The manual for your model names the exact pair.

2

Watch

The display shows temperatures as the dryer runs. After about two minutes it finishes on End or 0. Note the first and the last number.

3

Read it

A rise of more than 10 means heat and airflow are fine. A rise of 2 to 9 points to restricted airflow in the duct.

4

Flat numbers

Numbers that sit still or bounce point to the heater, the power cord or the voltage. That is when a technician should open the cabinet.

How LG wants the duct laid out

LG asks for a duct that runs straight or in a gentle S-curve behind the dryer, never coiled like a spring. It should be rigid or semi-rigid, with no holes and no loose joints. Outside, the flappers on the hood should swing fully open during an Air Dry cycle. Most Oahu dryers are electric, and EPA advises venting dryers outdoors to keep indoor humidity in check. A duct squashed behind a stacked pair in a narrow closet defeats both.

01

LG codes

It usually means the duct is about 80% blocked, but LG notes that on gas models it can also mean the burner is not getting enough gas.
That long run is what an HS code produces. The humidity sensor cannot read the load, so the dryer keeps going. Wiping the bars under the lint filter usually ends it.
That cycle starts with Energy Saver switched on. It skips heat for most of the run and leans on moving air, so loads take longer by design. On some models, holding the Energy Saver button for 3 seconds changes the default. If drying is slow with Energy Saver off, run the exhaust test.
Check the model number. CPSC announced the repair recall on August 21, 2012, for about 21,000 LG and Kenmore Elite gas dryers, among them LG models DLG0452W, DLG1320W and DLG2051W. The gas valve could keep heating after the cycle ended, and there were three reports of minor burns. The remedy was a gas valve replacement at no charge.
No, LG says not to use it; when Add shows, fill the feeder with ordinary water up to its max line.
02

Cycles, steam and recall

Wrinkle Care is on. It turns the drum for 10 seconds every six minutes for up to three hours, so clothes left inside do not set into creases.
Two or four lit bars mean the exhaust system is badly restricted.
LG suggests wiping the sensor bars 4 to 5 times once a month and having the home venting professionally cleaned once a year.
It is a cold-condition thermistor code, and LG ties it to the steam cycles.
When anything touching the sensors reaches the chosen dryness, which is 80% or Normal by default. Choose a drier setting if loads come out a little damp every time; if they come out soaked, look at the exhaust and the heater instead.
