GE dryer repair, from vent light to heat
Towels still damp after a GE Cottons cycle? Check ecoDry first. On current GE dryers it switches on by default for Cottons and trades a longer, cooler run for lower energy use. Turn it off, or pick More Dry, before you blame a part.

What does Check Vent mean on a GE dryer?
It means the dryer has sensed weak airflow, most often from a full lint screen or a restricted vent. GE's order of checks is simple. Clean the screen. Compare the duct with the installation instructions, look for kinks, and make sure the outside wall flap swings freely. Then dry one load on a sensor cycle. If the light clears, airflow was the problem. If it returns on a clean, short run, the cause sits inside the dryer.
GE dryer signs and what GE says they mean
Several of these come straight from GE's owner's manuals and look like faults when they are not. The rest narrow a real fault down before a part is ordered.
Drum turns, no heat
Most GE electric dryers use two breakers. With one tripped, the drum still turns but nothing heats.
A 1 or 2 shows
On 2019 and newer models the personality setting needs choosing. Start toggles between 1 and 2.
00 while it tumbles
That is the extended Wrinkle Care tumble. It runs about 60 minutes without showing a time.
Lights, no numbers
The dryer is still reading moisture. The time appears once the load gets fairly dry.
Rhythmic thumping
GE ties a thump to a frayed or damaged belt. That is a repair, not an adjustment.
No steam at all
Debris from the water supply can clog the steam nozzle. GE sells kit WE25M71 to replace it.
How long can a GE dryer vent run before it starts costing you?
A GE dryer vent can run up to 120 feet of 4 inch rigid metal duct, but every elbow shortens that limit. These figures come from GE's GTD65 installation instructions.
| 90 degree elbows | Recommended hood | Short-run hood | Elbow rule | What we check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| None | 120 feet | 90 feet | One elbow of 45 degrees or less can be ignored | Total length, wall cap flap |
| One | 100 feet | 75 feet | A side exhaust adds one 90 | Internal elbows from a side or bottom conversion |
| Two | 85 feet | 65 feet | Two 45s count as one 90 | Crushed duct behind the cabinet |
| Three | 70 feet | 55 feet | Anything sharper than 45 counts as a 90 | Lint packed at each turn |
| Four or five | 60 and 55 feet | 45 and 35 feet | Every turn shortens the run | Whether a shorter route exists |

Electric GEs, condo risers and the vent hood outside
Most GE dryers we open here are electric, since 72% of Hawaii homes were all-electric in EIA's 2020 survey, so the two-breaker check comes first on a no-heat call. In a stacked condo, the shared vent riser is usually the association's under Hawaii's condo law, while the branch to one unit is usually that unit's. Check the declaration before work starts. GE also asks owners to look at the outside hood for sticking flaps and nesting birds or insects.
