Samsung ice maker repair

A Samsung ice maker grades itself. After a reset, one chime means it passed its own test. Several chimes in a row mean it failed, and Samsung's answer at that point is a service call, not another reset.

Samsung ice makers and where the Test button hides

Samsung builds its ice makers into four different spots. The Test button and the bucket trick change with each, so start by matching yours.

Six Samsung ice faults and the first check

Most Samsung ice complaints trace to air, water or a part sitting wrong rather than a dead ice maker. Work through these before booking, and leave the Test button alone once the tray is full.

Wet, slushy ice

In a door ice room, the chute gasket is not flush on the bucket. Fridge air gets in and frosts the compartment.

Block in the bucket

Clear it and look for a white wire hanging under the ice maker. A visible wire means service.

Motor runs, no ice

The bucket is not fully seated, so the auger motor spins without reaching it. Reinsert at a slightly different angle.

Fused clumps

The auto defrost thaws stored ice a little and it refreezes. Clumps can also make the maker think the bucket is full.

Small, broken cubes

The mold did not fill before freezing, so water pressure is low. Pull the filter; if cubes improve, the filter is spent.

Ice Bites stopped

A bucket put in backwards lets the scoop holder block the maker. The REAR mark refers to the bucket, not the freezer.

Humid kitchens

Why frost builds in a Samsung ice compartment on Oahu

Samsung's frost guide is blunt: frost is air that got in and froze, and hot food put straight in makes it worse in humid climates. Windward lowland humidity here runs roughly 70 to 80 percent. Keep doors open under a minute, two inches clear at the vents, and cool leftovers. To check a French door ice room, open only the right door and look at the closed left one. The chute gasket should sit flat on the bucket. If it gaps, level the fridge so the front rests on its leveling legs with the wheels off the floor.

01

Reset and production

Yes. Once the tray holds water or ice, repeat presses can overflow the tray or jam the ice, so press it once and wait for the result.
Most models light an Ice Off icon while the maker is off, so toggle it until the icon goes dark. Top freezer models work the other way: Ice On should stay lit. Family Hub fridges switch it in the Fridge Manager app. On dual maker models one button cycles both icons, so keep tapping until neither is lit.
Yes, a normal cube is cloudy white and shaped like an orange slice, from minerals and air trapped by fast freezing.
Samsung names three causes: an old or damaged water filter, dirt in the supply after plumbing work in the home or street, or a damaged bucket. Flush a few gallons through the line, replace the filter, and look the parts over. Specks that remain after a new filter mean a closer look.
Every other week if ice is not being used much, so fresh ice replaces the fused batch.
02

Ice quality and dispensing

Unplug the fridge for 1 minute and try again. A little crushed ice or water before cubes is normal, since the last person may have left crushed ice in the bucket. If the wrong ice keeps coming, check the steel actuator rod under the bucket, which opens the chute flap.
Check for a lit padlock: Child Lock or Dispenser Lock blocks the dispenser. Then look for fused ice or broken bits packed around the bucket opening; warm water clears it, but dry the bucket fully before it goes back.
No. Samsung says it damages the refrigerator; never force a frozen bucket out, either.
That one is a service call. For Family Hub and other SmartThings fridges, Samsung has released firmware aimed at preventing it, which installs itself when the fridge stays connected.
We found none. The Samsung recalls we checked on cpsc.gov cover top-load washers and slide-in electric ranges, so an ice fault is handled as a normal repair.
