Usually the trip and the diagnosis, and with some companies the first hour of labor as well. That difference is why quotes disagree so much: one company folds the first hour in, another charges it separately. Many technicians also credit the diagnostic charge toward the repair if you go ahead. So when you compare quotes, ask two things. What does the visit include, and does it come off the repair? A low call-out that adds labor from the first minute can end up costing more than a higher one that does not.
Give the appliance, brand, model and symptom. A rough range is possible on the phone; a firm price is not, because the part is still unknown.
The technician finds the failed part. The diagnostic charge is stated before the visit, along with what it covers.
You get parts, labor and general excise tax in writing, plus a note if the part must ship from the mainland.
Approve the repair, wait for parts, or decline and keep the diagnosis. Nothing is replaced without your yes.
Sealed-system and compressor repairs on refrigerators cost the most, while belts, valves, igniters and switches cost the least.

Repair costs more in Honolulu because nearly everything does, though less than people expect. BEA puts the Urban Honolulu metro at 110.2 for all items in 2023, but only 101.9 for other services. Federal wage data give the middle appliance technician in Honolulu about 14 percent more per hour than the national median. Parts add a third layer, since most reach the island by ship or air. Then Hawaii's general excise tax goes on top, at 4.5 percent on Oahu.

A quote you can compare names the diagnostic charge and what it covers, splits parts from labor, and shows the excise tax as its own line. It should also say whether the part ships from the mainland and how that changes the timing. If the machine is still under a maker's coverage, check that first; our warranty repair notes explain what to ask. When the quote creeps close to a new machine, the repair or replace guide helps, and parts lead time covers the wait.
